Potato delivers Vet Connect and Google Veterans Channel

Michelle Obama discusses veterans initiative.

Google this week launches Vet Connect and Google Veterans Channel, the former enabling veterans to create profiles and meet similar veterans via their Google+ accounts, the latter bringing veterans and the public together via a YouTube channel. Both apps were built by Potato, and are backed by the US government.

The networking tool Vet Connect incorporates a similarity algorithm, devised by Potato, enabling veterans to calculate their proximity to each other, users can also quickly search and make contact with former colleagues. Vet Connect is built to scale as more people join and connect with one another.

The Google Veterans Channel, meanwhile, affords members of the public the opportunity to upload and share video tributes with veterans, and includes tips from other former service men and women, aimed at helping them transition back into civilian life.

The Veterans Channel integrates with the YouTube API and includes a map for displaying tributes. Potato also built a moderation system for user-generated video content.

Both apps were launched on Remembrance day, the White House blogging about these new rapidly built tools - including a video tribute from Michelle Obama. Read more about what we did.
