Part of the Google for Veterans campaign, Vet Connect and Google Veterans Channel are two Potato-built apps delivered as part of this US government-backed initiative.
The networking tool Vet Connect, which allows veterans to connect with one another via their Google+ accounts, incorporates a similarity algorithm - enabling veterans to calculate their proximity to each other. There is also rapid user search functionality. The app is built to scale as more people join and connect.
The Google Veterans Channel, a new YouTube app, allows members of the public the opportunity to upload and share video tributes with veterans, and includes advice from other former service men and women.
The channel integrates with the YouTube API and includes a map for displaying tributes. Potato also made a user-generated content moderation system.
Google for Veterans and Families is a single interface that brings together Google products and platforms for service members and their families. It was created by veterans, and family and friends of veterans, who work at Google. It was created to help all veterans, whether still in the service, transitioning out, or on a new path in their civilian lives.
We believe that technology can be a force for good; one that builds and binds community. As a Googler, my proudest moments are when we take that technology and put it in the hands of people who can use it to communicate, collaborate, build and explore.
